Think big, but don’t miss the smaller guys

Opinion: Looking at any general election over the past few decades, our political parties have tended not to campaign on international relations or defence and security policy, but on domestic matters that have a more immediate impact on New Zealanders’ daily lives.
In this environment, successive New Zealand governments have been able to pursue a foreign policy that has, for the most part, been focused on building positive trade relations, being a good development partner, and playing our part in multilateral institutions.
